Uralla Floodplain Risk Management Committee

The purpose of the Committee is to provide broad community input to the study, planning issues and any subsequent plans or strategies that emerge from the flood management process.

The Committee is a Section 355 Committee of Council meaning that is advisory in nature. Section 355 is the section of the Local Government Act 1993 that allows Council to delegate some of its functions to a Committee of Council.

The following list of frequently asked questions may aid an understanding of the role of the Committee. If we have not addressed a question you may have, or would like to know more, please contact Council on 6778 6300.

What will the Committee do?
The role of the Committee is to ensure that the Uralla community has input into the Uralla Floodplain Risk Management strategy. When complete, this long term strategy will identify flood prone lands and establish appropriate planning guidelines for those lands. It will also provide information valuable to emergency services and residents in respect to flooding and flood risk.

The Committee is a link between Council and the community. Through it, members of the public will be able to raise their concerns about flooding; contribute their valuable knowledge and expertise; and take part in discussion to find solutions to complex issues.

Can the Committee make planning decisions?
Floodplain management and planning are complex legal areas that are the statutory responsibility of Local and State Government. Council will make any necessary decisions in relation to floodplain planning.

Who else will be on the Committee?
The offer to sit on the Committee is open to all residents within Uralla Township. Council will also invite officers of certain agencies as required by the Act and the needs of the project. Council will endeavour to ensure that the composition of the Committee reflects community, emergency service, business and government interests in the plan.

Will I have to attend meetings?
Yes, it will be necessary to attend meetings.

When, where and how often will meetings be held?
The timing, frequency and duration of meetings will be determined by the Committee on an as-needed basis. All meetings will take place in Council Chambers.

Will I have to do any work?
You may be asked to do some reading to familiarise yourself with the topics for discussion. This may also involve some correspondence with Council between meetings. Council staff will provide the Secretarial services required by the Committee.

Will I be paid?
Unfortunately, it will not be possible to financially compensate you for your time. You are not expected to travel on behalf of the Committee, and there is no need to incur telephone, administrative or other expenses.
How long will the Committee last? Until the Uralla Risk Management Strategy is adopted and implemented.

How do I join?
