Council Launches SMS Notification Service for Easier Meter Access
Published on 30 July 2025
Council is making it easier for residents to stay informed about upcoming water meter reads with a new SMS notification service, now open for subscriptions.
If you have a dog or two, a locked gate, or your meter is tucked away in a tricky spot, we understand it can be difficult for our meter readers to safely and easily access your property. This often results in an estimated water bill and that can sometimes lead to unexpected higher bills down the track.
When our team can’t access your water meter, we’re required to generate an estimated reading based on your previous usage. While this keeps the billing cycle moving, it may not reflect actual water consumption, especially during high-use periods such as summer or when household routines change.
If several estimates are made in a row and we’re finally able to take an actual read, any differences between your estimated and actual usage will be reflected in your next bill. This can result in a higher-than-expected charge, which can catch residents off guard. You can read more about potential causes for higher-than-normal water bills HERE
A Simple Solution, SMS Notifications!
To help avoid this, we're rolling out a simple but effective SMS notification service. By signing up, you’ll receive a text message ahead of your next scheduled meter reading. That gives you time to:
- Secure your pets
- Unlock gates
