Council flags will fly at half-mast on Friday, 23 October 2020 as a mark of mourning and respect for the Honourable Susan Maree Ryan AO. The State Funeral will take place on Friday, 23 October 2020 at 11.00am.
Ms Ryan was elected as the first female Senator to the ACT in 1975 and was the first woman to hold a Cabinet position in a Labor Government. Ms Ryan served as the Minister for Education and Youth Affairs from 1983 to 1984, the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women from 1983 to 1988, the Minister for Education from 1984 to 1987, the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Bicentennial from 1987 to 1988, the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Community Services and Health from 1987 to 1988, and the Special Minister of State from 1987 to 1988.
Ms Ryan was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in June 1990 for service to the Australian Parliament.
